Zagora Mayor Zhivko Todorov Leaves Leadership of His GERB Party

Zhivko Todorov, the long-serving mayor of Stara Zagora and a prominent figure within the GERB party, has announced his resignation from the party’s Executive Commission. Todorov stated his decision via a Facebook post, indicating a desire to dedicate his full attention solely to the development of Stara Zagora. In his announcement, he expressed gratitude to his colleagues and wished them success in their ongoing efforts.

This departure follows a period of political shifts for GERB, which achieved its lowest result of 13.38% in the recent snap parliamentary elections held in April. Shortly after the election, on April 22, Todorov was present at a press conference alongside GERB leader Boyko Borissov, where the party outlined its strategy, emphasizing the need to maintain its right-wing and anti-corruption standing. Todorov’s resignation comes despite having recently been re-elected to the Executive Commission.

Furthermore, GERB’s highest body, the National Assembly, had unanimously reconfirmed Boyko Borissov as party leader. During that event, Borissov announced that Todorov and the Mayor of Burgas, Dimitar Nikolov, would collaborate with the party structures to support his initiatives. In response to Todorov’s announcement, GERB acknowledged his decision in a Facebook post, framing it as a “personal act of responsibility.” The party noted Todorov’s successful tenure as a mayor within GERB, stating that significant achievements were made for Stara Zagora through their joint efforts.

The statement also indicated that GERB was undertaking an internal analysis to identify areas for improvement within its own operations.
