Caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov publicly stated his and the entire caretaker government’s support for Georgi Kandev, the acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry. Gurov asserted that the support for Kandev extended to all “honest Bulgarian citizens.”
Gurov’s remarks followed a statement from Kandev, in which he alleged facing pressure to resign. Kandev claimed that individuals, including a person referred to as “Kartofa,” provided false testimony against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office.
In his address, Gurov characterized the situation as a “shameful attempt at revanchism.”
The Prime Minister stated that following actions taken to halt attacks on democracy and secure millions of euros intended to undermine elections, a conspiracy targeting the Secretary General had begun. Gurov named a former police chief and the businessman “Kartofa” as being involved in this alleged conspiracy. He labeled the actions as “revenge” and a warning to those willing to work lawfully.
Gurov specifically targeted the situation at the Sofia City Prosecution Office, naming prosecutor Emiliya Rusinova, who is associated with Petyo ‘The Euro’ Petrov, a figure described as a powerful influence within the Bulgarian judiciary and currently a fugitive. Furthermore, caretaker Interior Minister Emil Dechev had previously informed the media that in 2021, Rusinova was seen traveling with Petrov to North Macedonia. According to information obtained by the Interior Ministry, Rusinova reportedly crossed the border multiple times during these trips, accompanied by several individuals, at times including Petrov.
