Gurov Sees Conspiracy against Interior Ministry Secretary General

Caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov publicly expressed support for Georgi Kandev, the acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry, following statements made by Kandev. In a video message posted on Friday, Gurov stated that he and the entire caretaker government stand with Kandev, asserting that “Every honest Bulgarian citizen will stand behind him as well.”

Gurov’s comments followed Kandev’s own video message on Facebook, in which he claimed that pressure was mounting for him to resign. Kandev alleged that individuals, including a person referred to as “Kartofa,” had provided false testimony against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office.

The Prime Minister characterized the situation as a “shameful attempt at revanchism.”

According to Gurov, a “conspiracy against the Secretary General” has been initiated after efforts were made to halt attacks on democracy and secure funds intended to undermine elections. Gurov specifically named a former police chief and the businessman “Kartofa” as allegedly involved in this conspiracy. He labeled the actions as revenge, issuing a warning to those who are prepared to act lawfully and courageously.

Gurov further directed his comments toward the Sofia City Prosecution Office, naming prosecutor Emiliya Rusinova. He linked Rusinova to Petyo ‘The Euro’ Petrov, a figure described as a former investigating magistrate and a known influence in the Bulgarian judiciary, who is currently a fugitive. Additionally, caretaker Interior Minister Emil Dechev had previously reported that in 2021, Rusinova was seen traveling with Petrov to North Macedonia.
