Gurov Sees Conspiracy against Interior Ministry Secretary General

Caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov issued a statement on Friday affirming the support of himself and the caretaker government for Georgi Kandev, the acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry. Gurov stated that “every honest Bulgarian citizen will stand behind him as well.”

Gurov’s remarks followed a video message from Kandev, in which he alleged that he was pressured to resign due to false testimony being presented against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office by individuals, including one referred to as “Kartofa.” The Prime Minister characterized the situation as a “shameful attempt at revanchism.”

According to Gurov, a conspiracy against the Secretary General has emerged after actions taken to halt attacks on democracy and seize funds intended to undermine elections. Gurov specifically named a former police chief and the businessman “Kartofa” as being involved in this alleged plot.

He characterized the effort as “revenge” and a warning to those willing to work lawfully. The Prime Minister further alleged that this vendetta is occurring at the Sofia City Prosecution Office, naming prosecutor Emiliya Rusinova, who Gurov described as an associate of Petyo ‘The Euro’ Petrov and the prosecutor overseeing parliamentary immunities for the caretaker government. Gurov addressed political opponents, asserting that the government is aware of their actions and that the public supports Kandev’s position within the Interior Ministry.

Further context provided by the Ministry suggests that caretaker Interior Minister Emil Dechev reported that in 2021, Rusinova was seen traveling with Petrov to North Macedonia. Information obtained at the Interior Ministry also indicated that Rusinova repeatedly crossed the border on trips accompanied by four or five individuals, sometimes including Petrov.
