Bulgarians Join EU Citizens’ Crisis Preparedness Online Debate

One hundred and fifty citizens representing various EU member states convened from April 24 to 26 for the second session of the European Citizens’ Panel on Preparedness. The gathering aims to generate concrete policy ideas regarding how the European Union can enhance its collective response to future crises and shocks. The discussions are designed to ensure that actions taken under the EU preparedness union strategy are inclusive and directly address the needs of the populace.

Participants are deepening their exploration of priorities previously identified in March. Key areas under review include bolstering citizen engagement, advancing education and solidarity, promoting inclusion, maintaining the integrity of communication—specifically combating disinformation—and refining overall crisis management protocols across Europe. Among the attendees are four Bulgarians representing Sofia, Burgas, Isperih, and Reberkovo.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Antoaneta Petkova, who attended from Reberkovo, emphasized the need to continue developing proposals previously raised. She highlighted the necessity of introducing comprehensive educational training for all age groups, encompassing both theoretical knowledge and practical crisis response skills. Petkova noted that the panel will also discuss several other critical ideas related to disaster and crisis response.

The collaborative efforts of these citizens are vital for shaping a robust, citizen-centric approach to European preparedness. The plenary sessions are available for live viewing on the panel’s official website.
