Following a statement from Interior Ministry’s acting Secretary General Georgi Kandev, alleging pressure to resign, Continue the Change (CC) leader Assen Vassilev issued a public critique via Facebook. Vassilev asserted that in Bulgaria, individuals reportedly face attempts to discredit them once they begin doing their professional duties. He described the alleged threats against Secretary General Kandev as “absolutely scandalous.”
Vassilev further stated that the replacement of the Supreme Judicial Council and the comprehensive reform of the judiciary were necessary steps to achieve a “prosperous, just, and European Bulgaria.” His comments were accompanied by a photograph of Kandev, captioned with the message, “I won’t go home.”
The controversy gained momentum earlier on Friday when Kandev posted a video message on Facebook.
In this video, he stated that he had “received a message to go home,” but affirmed that he would not “bow to threats and backroom deals.” Kandev reported that he had been informed that individuals, including a person known by the nickname “Kartofa” [The Potato], had presented false testimony against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office on Thursday. The exchange highlights ongoing political tensions regarding institutional integrity and personnel within the Bulgarian government structure. Vassilev’s commentary suggests a broader dissatisfaction with the current state of judicial governance, framing the dispute as a necessary effort to ensure proper function among public officials.
