Acting Interior Minister Emil Dechev publicly addressed allegations suggesting efforts to undermine Georgi Kandev, the acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry. In a Facebook post on Friday, Dechev stated that “old cops” were employing familiar tactics to neutralize Kandev. Earlier in the day, Kandev had stated in a video message that he faced pressure to resign due to false testimonies being submitted against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office.
Following these developments, acting Prime Minister Andrey Gurov also issued a video message, characterizing the situation as a “shameful attempt at revanchism.” Gurov noted that following actions taken to curb attacks on democracy and seize funds meant to undermine elections, a conspiracy against the Secretary General had emerged. Dechev reiterated his support for Kandev, expressing full confidence in his integrity. He suggested that the future interior minister would face significant responsibility in resolving what he termed a “fabricated scandal.” Dechev also highlighted the efforts of the caretaker Government and the Interior Ministry over the past two months, claiming they had successfully minimized electoral crimes, which he described as a “plague on Bulgarian democracy.” He attributed this achievement to considerable effort and resolve, asserting that the opposition’s challenge came from allies within the judiciary.
