Dechev: “Old Cops Are Using Dirty Tricks to Neutralize Interior Ministry’s Secretary General”

Acting Interior Minister Emil Dechev accused elements within the police force of employing tactics intended to undermine and neutralize Georgi Kandev, the acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry. Earlier in the day, Kandev stated in a video message that he faced pressure to resign, citing instances of false testimony being presented against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office. The controversy was addressed by acting Prime Minister Andrey Gurov, who described the situation as a “shameful attempt at revanchism.” Gurov noted that following efforts to curb attacks on democracy and the seizure of misused election funds, a conspiracy targeting the Secretary General had emerged.

Dechev publicly affirmed his support for Kandev, asserting his belief in the official’s integrity. The Minister further highlighted the recent efforts of the caretaker Government and the Interior Ministry to limit electoral misconduct. Dechev characterized these actions as a necessary response to what he termed a struggle against forces attempting to undermine the will of the Bulgarian electorate during elections, suggesting that opponents have allies within the judiciary.

The statements indicate escalating political tensions surrounding the leadership of the Ministry. The officials discussed the commitment of the acting government to maintaining order and integrity within the country’s electoral processes, emphasizing the importance of the interior ministry’s role in safeguarding democratic institutions.
