During his participation at the Delphi Economic Forum, the EU Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, addressed the current energy landscape. He stated that the European Union maintains sufficient reserves of aviation fuel and has the capacity to activate emergency stocks for a period of up to three months. In his remarks concerning the ongoing energy crisis, Tzitzikostas suggested that recent flight cancellations reported by some airlines are primarily linked to escalating fuel costs rather than actual supply deficits.
He characterized the current energy crisis as historically significant and issued a forecast predicting a challenging summer for the continent. Furthermore, the Commissioner cautioned that unresolved conflicts in the Middle East could lead to severe global repercussions. On the matter of security, Tzitzikostas highlighted the EU’s military mobility plan, which involves the modernization of 500 strategically important sites across Europe.
Turning to economic trends, he also forecast a notable decline in tourist arrivals originating from Asia heading to Europe. The Delphi Forum, which continues through Saturday, April 25, serves as a major gathering for international discourse. It features over 200 discussions and panels, drawing approximately 1,200 international speakers.
Participants represent governments, academia, international organizations, and the business sector, focusing discussions on geopolitics, economic trends, and technological transformations.
