Has Sufficient Reserves of Aviation Fuel, Says Transport Commissioner

At the Delphi Economic Forum, EU Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, addressed several key economic and geopolitical challenges facing Europe. Regarding aviation, Tzitzikostas stated that the European Union maintains sufficient reserves of aviation fuel, which could support operations for a period of up to three months. He suggested that recent flight cancellations reported by some airlines are primarily attributable to escalating fuel costs rather than actual supply shortages.

The Commissioner characterized the current energy crisis as unprecedented in scope, leading him to forecast a challenging summer period ahead. Furthermore, Tzitzikostas cautioned that the global ramifications could be severe if the conflict in the Middle East does not reach a swift resolution. In discussions covering broader security and economic stability, he also highlighted the EU’s ongoing military mobility plan, which involves modernizing 500 strategically important sites across the continent.

On the tourism front, he predicted a noticeable downturn in the number of travelers originating from Asia heading to Europe. The Delphi Forum continues through Saturday, April 25, hosting over 200 discussions and panels. The event convenes approximately 1,200 international speakers—including representatives from governments, academia, and business—to focus on critical areas such as geopolitics, economic shifts, and technological transformations.
