, Bulgaria! Accuse Prosecutors of Being Used to Target Reformers After Pressure Claims by Interior Ministry Official

The Yes, Bulgaria party accused prosecutors in Bulgaria of being used to target officials involved in institutional reform. These statements followed claims by Interior Ministry acting Secretary General Georgi Kandev, who stated he was facing pressure and false testimony regarding unspecified wrongdoing. Speaking at a party briefing, Yes, Bulgaria co-chair Ivaylo Mirchev asserted that the prosecution service was once again being utilized as part of what he termed the “Borissov-Peevski model.” Mirchev suggested that this model continues to operate, noting that the prosecution is being used against reform efforts.

His comments followed Kandev’s report on social media, where he stated he had received calls warning him to cease his activities, alleging that false testimony was being generated at the Sofia City Prosecution Office. Mirchev framed the current pressure as retaliation against officials who supported fair elections. The party also announced submitting an alert concerning a media investigation alleging bribery involving former Supreme Administrative Court chairman Georgi Cholakov.

Co-chair Bozhidar Bozhanov called for comprehensive reviews of related reports and asset declarations for senior magistrates. Furthermore, the party requested parliamentary scrutiny regarding Delyan Peevski’s reported private jet travel, which, according to Bozhanov, was allegedly undeclared in his financial statements. The group indicated it would push for an ad hoc committee to examine the financing of these flights.

Acting Agriculture Minister Ivan Hristanov also addressed a separate media alert concerning the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency, stating the ministry would investigate the matter and alert the prosecution service if impropriety is established.
