The Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) initiated a nationwide series of discussions across its national press clubs to commemorate the 160th birth anniversary of poet Pencho Slaveykov and to explore the themes of Bulgarian modernism. The commemorative events began in Tryavna, the poet’s hometown, at the Slaveykov House Museum. The December issue of LIK magazine will document the campaign, featuring reports from the discussions and a special section comprising 160 individual contributions.
During the launch event, BTA Director General Kiril Valchev stated that Pencho Slaveykov represents a model for the modern individual—one who embraces new ideas while maintaining spiritual growth and cultural continuity. Valchev noted that Slaveykov’s work, shaped by his father and Bulgaria’s liberation struggles, demonstrates that modernity does not necessitate abandoning national tradition. Literary scholar Yordan Eftimov emphasized that a key objective of the initiative is to develop a national “self-portrait” through new interpretations of established works, helping the Bulgarian public understand its culture amidst misinformation.
Tryavna Mayor Dencho Minev praised Slaveykov as a profound observer of the national character and a critic who pushed for higher artistic standards. The commemoration highlights the enduring cultural significance of the poet. Vijay Joshi, CEO of India’s PTI, observed the model of BTA partnering with local communities to preserve and promote culture.

It’s interesting to see a national focus on both Slaveykov and the themes of Bulgarian modernism.
