The Yes, Bulgaria party accused prosecutors in Bulgaria on Friday of being used to target officials involved in institutional reform. These accusations followed statements from Interior Ministry acting Secretary General Georgi Kandev, who claimed he was subjected to pressure and smeared through false testimony regarding unspecified wrongdoing. Speaking at the party’s headquarters, Yes, Bulgaria co-chair Ivaylo Mirchev stated that the prosecution service was being utilized as part of what he termed the “Borissov-Peevski model,” named after GERB leader Boyko Borissov and Movement for Rights and Freedoms leader Delyan Peevski.
Mirchev asserted that this model was continuing to function, with the prosecution being used, as before, against those working toward reform. His comments followed Kandev’s assertion on Facebook that he had received calls warning him to “go home,” alleging that individuals were providing false testimony against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office, an effort he believed aimed at forcing his resignation. Mirchev characterized the pressure against Kandev, caretaker Interior Minister Emil Dechev, and caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov as an attempt at retaliation for their commitment to fair elections.
The party further announced that Mirchev and co-chair Bozhidar Bozhanov submitted an alert regarding a journalistic investigation alleging recordings of conversations between former Supreme Administrative Court chairman Georgi Cholakov and an intermediary involved in arranging court decisions for bribes. Bozhanov called for thorough checks of all related reports and a review of assets for senior magistrates, including acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov and Cholakov. The party also indicated plans to request a parliamentary hearing concerning whether Delyan Peevski was using private jets for travel abroad without declaring it in his financial interests statement.
