The Yes, Bulgaria party accused prosecutors on Friday of being used, once again, to target officials involved in institutional reform within Bulgaria. These accusations followed statements from Interior Ministry acting Secretary General Georgi Kandev, who claimed he was subjected to pressure and smeared by false testimony regarding unspecified wrongdoing. Speaking at the party’s headquarters, Yes, Bulgaria co-chair Ivaylo Mirchev asserted that the prosecution service was being utilized as part of what he termed the “Borissov-Peevski model,” named after GERB leader Boyko Borissov and Movement for Rights and Freedoms leader Delyan Peevski.
Mirchev stated that this model continues to operate, and the prosecution is being used, as before, to target reformers. His comments followed Kandev’s earlier Facebook video, where he detailed receiving calls from hidden numbers alleging false testimony against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office, which he believed aimed to force his resignation. Mirchev suggested that the current pressure against Kandev, caretaker Interior Minister Emil Dechev, and caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov was an act of retaliation for their support of fair elections.
Furthermore, Mirchev announced that the party had submitted an alert to the prosecution service concerning a journalistic investigation alleging recordings of conversations involving former Supreme Administrative Court chairman Georgi Cholakov and an intermediary arranging court decisions for bribes. Mirchev criticized Cholakov, calling him “Peevski’s lawyer.” The party also called for thorough checks on senior magistrates’ assets, including acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov. Additionally, Yes, Bulgaria intends to request a parliamentary hearing regarding media reports suggesting Delyan Peevski utilized private jets for travel abroad without declaring the associated finances.
