Daniil: April Uprising Birthed Not Only Unparalleled Heroism but Also Martyrdom for Faith

On Monday, Bulgarian Patriarch and Metropolitan of Sofia Daniil officiated a memorial service at Sofia’s St Alexander Nevsky Memorial Cathedral to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. Addressing journalists, Patriarch Daniil emphasized that the April Uprising represented not only unparalleled heroism but also the emergence of martyrdom for the faith. He stated that during the tragic events of the uprising, many ancestors faced a choice between adopting a different cultural identity or upholding their Orthodox faith, which they chose.

Patriarch Daniil noted that the Church honors the heroes of the April Uprising, maintaining a tradition of offering prayers at every service and liturgy for those who perished for their faith and the nation’s freedom. He suggested that the self-sacrifice of these individuals garnered attention from international public opinion and the governments of major powers, as well as divine consideration. In his blessing, the Bulgarian Patriarch Daniil prayed that the martyrs of the April Uprising would assist in preserving the Orthodox faith, which he described as teaching valor, honesty, courage, and sacrificial love for neighbors—a foundation for Bulgaria’s survival.

The memorial service was attended by high-profile figures, including President Iliana Iotova, caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov, and the President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Evelina Slavcheva. Following the ceremony, Patriarch Daniil and President Iotova led a procession to the BAS building for a national commemorative assembly, an event held under the President’s auspices.
