Daniil: April Uprising Birthed Not Only Unparalleled Heroism but Also Martyrdom for Faith

On Monday, Patriarch Daniil, the Bulgarian Patriarch and Metropolitan of Sofia, officiated a memorial service commemorating the victims of the 150-year anniversary of the April Uprising at Sofia’s St Alexander Nevsky Memorial Cathedral. Addressing journalists, Patriarch Daniil stated that the April Uprising represented not only unparalleled heroism but also the genesis of martyrdom for the faith. He noted that during the tragic events of the uprising, many ancestors faced a choice between adopting a different culture or facing execution, choosing instead to remain faithful to their Orthodox faith and souls.

The Patriarch stated that on this day, the Church honors the heroes of the April Uprising, continuing its tradition of praying for all those who died for the faith and the nation’s freedom. He suggested that the self-sacrifice of these individuals brought their cause before both international public opinion and divine consideration. In his blessing, Patriarch Daniil prayed that the martyrs of the April Uprising would help uphold the Orthodox faith, which he described as teaching valor, honesty, courage, and sacrificial love.

The memorial service was attended by several prominent figures, including President Iliana Iotova, caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov, and President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Evelina Slavcheva. Following the service, Patriarch Daniil and President Iotova led a procession to the BAS building for a national commemorative assembly, which took place under the auspices of the President.
