On 150th Anniversary of April Uprising Held in Panagyurishte

A conference marking the 150th anniversary of the 1876 April Uprising was held at the History Museum in Panagyurishte. This event concluded a series of discussions organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) to foster dialogue surrounding the anniversary. Participants included BTA Director General Kiril Valchev, BNR Director General Milen Mitev, Prof.

Georgi Valchev, Panagyurishte Mayor Zhelyazko Gagov, journalist Boyko Vassilev, and Assoc. Prof. Atanas Shopov.

BTA Director General Valchev stated that discussions about the April Uprising revive the memory of those who sacrificed for Bulgaria’s freedom. He noted that these talks took place in the press clubs of the four revolutionary districts—Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Vratsa, and Panagyurishte—as well as Ruse and Giurgiu. Valchev emphasized the consensus reached: prioritizing broad goals over immediate, difficult steps.

BNR Director General Mitev stressed the media’s vital role in shaping public opinion, arguing that connecting with the audience is crucial. He suggested that national pride must be cultivated responsibly, preventing the manipulation of history. Prof.

Valchev urged viewing history as a “living page,” noting that the 1876 uprising demonstrated the desire of Bulgarians to control their destiny. Panagyurishte Mayor Gagov called for the anniversary to prompt reflection on unity, urging Bulgarians to be worthy heirs of the ordinary people who became heroes. Boyko Vassilev highlighted the lasting impact of journalists like Zahari Stoyanov, Hristo Botev, and Januarius MacGahan during the April Uprising.

The discussions, according to attendees, link the historical events to enduring questions relevant to contemporary Bulgarian life.
