On 150th Anniversary of April Uprising Held in Panagyurishte

A conference commemorating the 150th anniversary of the 1876 April Uprising was held at the History Museum in Panagyurishte. This event marked the conclusion of a series of discussions organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) to foster dialogue surrounding the significance of the uprising. Participants included BTA Director General Kiril Valchev, BNR Director General Milen Mitev, Rector of the St Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia, and several local officials and journalists.

BTA Director General Valchev stated that discussions about the April Uprising serve to keep the memory of the martyrs for Bulgaria’s freedom alive. He noted that the conversations took place in the press clubs of the four revolutionary districts—Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Vratsa, and Panagyurishte—in addition to Ruse and Giurgiu. Valchev emphasized the consensus reached: the necessity of considering overarching goals before undertaking difficult steps.

BNR Director General Mitev highlighted the media’s crucial role in connecting with the public during such commemorations. He argued that learning from the uprising involves recognizing the foundational element of hope and willingness to sacrifice. Prof.

Valchev urged viewing history as an active subject, advocating for moving beyond mere slogans to address Bulgaria’s complex current period. He identified three key lessons from 1876: the desire for self-determination, belief in the nation’s future, and the responsibility of the younger generation. Mayor Gagov suggested the anniversary should prompt reflection on unity, urging Bulgarians to honor the legacy of ordinary people who became heroes.

Journalist Boyko Vassilev noted that the discussions connected historical events to contemporary issues, suggesting the April Uprising remains a relevant touchstone for Bulgaria’s public life.
