On 150th Anniversary of April Uprising Held in Panagyurishte

A conference marking the 150th anniversary of the 1876 April Uprising was held at the History Museum in Panagyurishte. This event concluded a series of discussions organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) to foster dialogue regarding the uprising’s centenary. Participants included BTA Director General Kiril Valchev, BNR Director General Milen Mitev, Prof.

Georgi Valchev, Panagyurishte Mayor Zhelyazko Gagov, journalist Boyko Vassilev, and Assoc. Prof. Atanas Shopov, Director of the Panagyurishte History Museum.

BTA Director General Valchev stated that discussions about the April Uprising revive the memory of those who sacrificed for Bulgarian freedom. He noted that the discussions, held across the four revolutionary districts—Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Vratsa, and Panagyurishte—as well as Ruse and Giurgiu, emphasized the need to establish overarching goals before tackling difficult steps. He also announced that the 2026 Meeting of Bulgarian Media, organized by BTA, will focus on “Media and Leaders” in Hungary.

BNR Director General Mitev stressed the media’s crucial role in connecting with the public, citing the April Uprising as an example of people’s commitment. He advised that cultivating national pride must be responsible, emphasizing the media and scholars’ duty to build self-esteem based on genuine historical achievements. Prof.

Valchev urged viewing history as an active subject, moving beyond superficial patriotism. He identified three key lessons from 1876: the desire for self-determination, the belief in the nation’s future, and the vital role of the younger generation. Mayor Gagov urged Bulgarians to honor the legacy of ordinary people, suggesting the anniversary should prompt reflection on unity.

Boyko Vassilev highlighted the lasting impact of journalists during the uprising and noted that the event continues to raise relevant questions for contemporary Bulgarian public life.
