On the occasion marking 150 years since the April Uprising, Bulgarian Patriarch and Metropolitan of Sofia Daniil officiated a memorial service for the priests and laypeople who were victims of the conflict at Sofia’s St Alexander Nevsky Memorial Cathedral. Speaking to journalists, Patriarch Daniil noted that the uprising represented not only unparalleled heroism but also significant martyrdom for the faith. He stated that during the challenging outcome of the uprising, many ancestors faced a choice, ultimately choosing their Orthodox faith and spiritual conviction.
The Patriarch affirmed that the Church honors the heroes of the April Uprising, continuing its tradition of praying for all who perished defending both the faith and the homeland. Daniil added that the self-sacrifice of these individuals prompted a call that resonated globally, reaching international public opinion and the major world powers. He concluded his address by invoking prayers for the continuation of the Orthodox faith, which he described as a source of valor, honesty, and selfless love for neighbors.
The memorial service was attended by numerous dignitaries, including President Iliana Iotova, caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov, President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, and representatives from various political and academic groups. Following the service, Patriarch Daniil and President Iotova led a procession to the BAS building for a national commemorative assembly, an event held under the auspices of the Presidency.
