‘s Social Democratic Party, Alliance for the Union of Romanians to Table No-Confidence Vote Against Bolojan Government

The Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the opposition far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) have announced plans to jointly submit a no-confidence motion against the government led by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. The joint statement was issued on Monday, following the resignation of several PSD ministers from Bolojan’s cabinet on April 23. The PSD issued a press release stating that the ministerial resignations formalized the party’s decision to withdraw its political support.

According to the statement, Bolojan no longer possessed the parliamentary majority necessary to maintain leadership, thus undermining his democratic legitimacy. Meanwhile, AUR representatives clarified that their cooperation with the PSD was limited solely to supporting the no-confidence proposal. They stated that AUR’s objective is to provoke early elections, citing the current government’s inability to manage the national economy.

In response to the mounting political pressure, Bolojan asserted that he would not resign and intends to continue fulfilling his mandate while working toward establishing a minority government. Amid the instability, President Nicusor Dan held discussions during the week of April 20-26 with leaders of the ruling coalition. The President confirmed that these talks excluded any cooperation with anti-Western forces, specifically mentioning AUR.

Discussions centered on critical programs, including the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, OECD accession, and the EU defense instrument SAFE. These ongoing consultations remain central to the political efforts to stabilize the governing coalition.
