Of Retail Prices in Mid-April Shows Stable Basic Foods, Cheaper Vegetables

Data from the Agricultural Market Information System (AMIS), covering the 17th week of 2026 across Bulgaria’s 28 regions, indicates that consumer prices showed positive trends in mid April. Greenhouse vegetables experienced their third consecutive week of price decreases, while the essential consumer basket—including meat, milk, bread, and legumes—remained stable compared to the second week of April. Specific vegetable prices saw notable reductions.

In mid April, retail prices dropped for cucumbers by 13% to €2.98/kg, tomatoes by 11% to €3.65/kg, and eggplants by 11% to €3.66/kg. Green onions fell 7–8% to €8.14/kg, and strawberries decreased by 4% to €4.85/kg. Analysts attribute these declines to the increased availability of local produce.

Conversely, prices for lettuce increased by 12% to €1.37 per piece, and spinach rose by 5% to €3.24/kg. Basic staples such as bread, sugar, rice, and cooking oil generally maintained their prices week-over-week.
