Students Announce New Major Protest in May

Students in Serbia have indicated plans for a new large-scale demonstration scheduled for May, according to posts shared on the social media platform X. University students, who have been involved in ongoing campus blockades, have signaled intentions to organize a protest similar in scale to the mass anti-government demonstrations held over the preceding year and a half. The unrest gained momentum following a significant incident on November 1, 2024, when a concrete canopy collapsed at a recently renovated railway station in Novi Sad, resulting in 16 fatalities and multiple injuries.

In response to this event, students initially began blocking universities, leading to suspensions of classes. In subsequent posts, the students referenced specific dates from previous demonstrations, citing December 22, 2024, at Slavija Square in Belgrade, alongside dates of March 15 and June 28, 2025, also in Belgrade, stating that “this series will soon continue.” On May 5, 2025, the students formally called for early parliamentary elections in Serbia. The latest social media communications suggest that the next major protest is anticipated sometime in May, though a definitive date has not yet been announced.

The movement continues to reference its prior mobilization efforts, which began in late 2024. These developments suggest sustained political activity among the student body regarding the national governance structure.
