Students Announce New Major Protest in May

Serbian students have announced plans for a new, large-scale protest scheduled for May, according to posts shared on the X platform by accounts associated with the movement. These posts suggest the organization of a demonstration similar in scope to the mass anti-government protests that occurred over the preceding year and a half. The initial unrest stemmed from the fatal incident on November 1, 2024, when a concrete canopy collapsed at a recently renovated railway station in Novi Sad, resulting in 16 deaths and several injuries.

Following this event, students began blocking universities and suspending classes in solidarity with the victims. In their communications, the students referenced the dates of prior major demonstrations, citing December 22, 2024, at Slavija Square in Belgrade, alongside March 15 and June 28, 2025, also in Belgrade. They indicated that this series of actions is expected to continue.

More recently, on May 5, 2025, the students publicly called for early parliamentary elections in Serbia. While the timing of the upcoming demonstration is anticipated for May, no specific date has been officially announced. The ongoing activity reflects sustained student mobilization regarding governance and public safety issues.
