On 150th Anniversary of April Uprising Held in Panagyurishte

A conference marking the 150th anniversary of the 1876 April Uprising was held at the History Museum in Panagyurishte. This event concluded a series of discussions organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) across several revolutionary districts, focusing on the historical significance of the uprising. Participants, including directors from state media and academics, discussed the enduring lessons derived from the 1876 events.

BTA Director General Kiril Valchev noted that the discussions emphasize the need to prioritize overarching goals before tackling the necessary difficult steps. Speakers addressed the role of national identity and media in modern society. BNR Director General Milen Mitev stressed that media outlets must actively connect with their audiences, as they significantly influence public opinion.

He advised that national pride must be cultivated responsibly, acknowledging the potential for historical narratives to be manipulated. Academic perspectives highlighted viewing history as an ongoing process rather than merely commemorating past events. A university rector argued that the primary lessons from the April Uprising involve self-determination, belief in the nation’s future, and the critical role of the younger generation.

Mayor Zhelyazko Gagov urged the public to view the anniversary as an opportunity to foster unity and recognize the common roots shared by all Bulgarians. Journalist Boyko Vassilev pointed out that the uprising raises enduring questions relevant to contemporary Bulgarian public life. The consensus among attendees was that the commemoration should encourage reflection on the sacrifices made and the continuous need for civic engagement.
