During a conference marking the 150th anniversary of the 1876 April Uprising, Kiril Valchev, Director General of the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), stated that the discussions serve to remember the martyrs who fought for Bulgaria’s freedom. This event was the culmination of a series of dialogues held across the revolutionary districts—including Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Vratsa, Panagyurishte, Ruse, and Giurgiu. Valchev noted that the talks explored significant lessons from the April Uprising relevant to contemporary society.
He emphasized a core consensus reached among participants: the necessity of defining overarching goals before undertaking difficult steps to achieve them. He further observed that historical setbacks, such as the initial outcome of the uprising, can ultimately contribute to profound success, drawing a parallel to themes of salvation. He stressed the significant power media outlets hold to influence public opinion and contribute to national preservation, as demonstrated after the April Uprising across Europe.
The discussions drew insights from Zahari Stoyanov’s Notes on the Bulgarian Uprisings, highlighting that effective leadership requires activity, dedication to public welfare over personal gain, and the ability to guide followers away from despair. Valchev detailed the extensive preparatory events organized by the BTA, which included laying flowers at memorials in Giurgiu and Ruse, and honoring figures like Hristo Botev and Vasil Levski. Looking ahead, Valchev announced that the BTA will organize the 2026 Meeting
