Director General of the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), Kiril Valchev, stated that discussions surrounding the April Uprising serve to commemorate the martyrs who fought for Bulgaria’s freedom. These remarks were made at the opening of a conference marking the 150th anniversary of the 1876 April Uprising at the Historical Museum in Panagyurishte. This event concludes a series of discussions organized by BTA across several revolutionary districts, including Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Vratsa, and Giurgiu.
During the conference, Valchev emphasized key lessons derived from the uprising, noting that the most crucial takeaway is the necessity of maintaining focus on overarching objectives despite the difficulties encountered during implementation. He highlighted that instances perceived as failures ultimately contributed to Bulgaria’s success in achieving freedom. Valchev drew a parallel between this historical resilience and the concept of salvation, stressing that media coverage possesses significant power to shape public opinion and support a nation’s survival.
The discussions also reviewed historical guidance, citing Zahari Stoyanov’s Notes on the Bulgarian Uprisings. According to Valchev, these sources advise leaders to remain proactive, avoid personal enrichment, and shield their followers from despair. He recalled the extensive preparatory efforts, including commemorative events held in various locations like Ruseto, Giurgiu, and Vratsa.
Looking forward, Valchev announced that BTA plans to continue these discussions internationally in Bucharest, Belgrade, and Odesa. Furthermore, he revealed that the 2026 Meeting of Bulgarian Media, organized by BTA, will be dedicated to the theme “Media and Leaders,” building upon the insights gained from the historical memory of the April Uprising.
