The Plovdiv Municipal Council recently voted to submit a request to assume management responsibilities for the Episcopal Basilica of Philippopolis, transferring oversight from the Culture Ministry. The structure of the basilica involves a co-ownership arrangement, where the Plovdiv Municipality holds a 55.8% stake, while the State retains the remaining 44.2%. According to the Municipal Council, this proposed transfer of management aims to enhance the protection, maintenance, and ongoing activities concerning the site’s significant immovable cultural value.
The council stated that gaining direct control will facilitate the implementation of scientific research, educational programs, and tourism initiatives related to the area. The Municipal Council articulated a clear strategy for the exhibition, promotion, and overall preservation of the site’s rich cultural and historical heritage. The Basilica of Philippopolis is recognized for its high historical, artistic, and scientific importance.
Its significance is further underscored by its inclusion on the UNESCO Tentative List for Cultural and Natural Heritage, specifically as part of the serial property known as the “Bishop’s Basilica and Late-Antique Mosaics of Philippopolis, Roman Province of Thrace.”
The council’s decision reflects a local commitment to safeguarding this major landmark. By taking over the management of the basilica, the municipality intends to streamline efforts to preserve the complex while maximizing its potential for cultural engagement and scholarly study.
