Ukrainian Ex-Servicemen Charged with Espionage Left in Indefinite Custody

The Sofia City Court (SCC) placed two Ukrainian ex-servicemen, Oleksiy Timofeev and Roman Zozulya, in indefinite custody on Friday after issuing a ruling on Thursday. The decision is appealable before a higher court. The SCC panel determined that sufficient evidence exists to support the charges brought against the two men.

Given the severity of the charges, the court cited a risk that the individuals might abscond or reoffend. Should they be convicted, the men face potential sentences ranging from 10 to 20 years of imprisonment, life imprisonment, or life imprisonment without commutation. The case proceedings were temporarily adjourned at the request of the defense to allow for medical certification.

The two men were initially detained in Bulgaria on January 12, 2026, near a military installation. Identification details reveal that Oleksiy Timofeev, 41, was a lieutenant in the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) who managed an unmanned aircraft systems department before retiring due to injury. Roman Zozulya, 32, previously served with the AFU assault forces before retiring following an injury sustained from a high-explosive shell to the head.

Both Ukrainian nationals are currently residing in Guardamar del Segura, Alicante Province, Spain.
