Students Walk “In the Footsteps of Heroes” to Mark 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

Students from Sofia schools participated in “In the Footsteps of the Heroes,” a historical game organized by the Sofia Municipality. The event took place in Boris Garden Park to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The initiative focused on the Prominent Bulgarians alley, where teams of students engaged in an educational activity centered on Bulgarian history and national figures.

During the structured activity, participants were tasked with locating monuments dedicated to national heroes. By answering questions related to the country’s history, the students progressed along routes connecting key revolutionaries, including Vasil Levski, Hristo Botev, Zahari Stoyanov, Todor Kableshkov, and Georgi Benkovski. The learning process involved collecting pieces of a symbolic map representing the uprising.

Deputy Mayor Desislava Zhelyazkova, responsible for education and urban development, stated that the event serves to commemorate a significant act of courage 150 years ago, providing students with an immersive way to experience history beyond traditional classroom settings. Upon concluding the walk, each team composed a brief message to the Bulgarian people, reflecting on their newly acquired historical knowledge. This game concept was developed with the collaboration of history teacher Emil Jassim and is integrated into the Sofia Municipality’s cultural program, executed in partnership with Sofia’s Regional Education Directorate.

The event successfully engaged students by linking physical exploration with deep historical understanding, honoring the memory of Bulgaria’s heroes.
