Students Walk “In the Footsteps of Heroes” to Mark 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

Students from Sofia schools participated in “In the Footsteps of the Heroes,” a historical game organized by the Sofia Municipality. The event, held in Boris Garden Park to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, took place along the Prominent Bulgarians alley. The initiative engaged teams of students in an educational scavenger hunt, requiring them to locate monuments dedicated to national heroes and answer questions pertaining to Bulgarian history.

According to Deputy Mayor Desislava Zhelyazkova, who oversees education and urban development, the event was designed to move students beyond traditional classroom learning by connecting them with a significant historical moment. Participants followed designated routes linking key figures such as revolutionaries Vasil Levski, Hristo Botev, Zahari Stoyanov, Todor Kableshkov, and Georgi Benkovski. As they navigated the area, the students collected segments of a symbolic map representing the uprising by correctly answering historical queries.

Upon completing the walk, each team composed a brief message addressed to the Bulgarian people, inspired by the knowledge they had acquired. The game concept was developed with the collaboration of history teacher Emil Jassim and is part of the Sofia Municipality’s cultural program, implemented in partnership with Sofia’s Regional Education Directorate. The activity successfully provided the students with a tangible, experiential understanding of the lives and contributions of these national heroes.
