The Bulgarian Tourist Agency (BTA) initiated a nationwide series of discussions across its national press clubs to commemorate the 160th birth anniversary of poet Pencho Slaveykov and the era of Bulgarian modernism. The campaign commenced with an event titled “Pencho Slaveykov Today” held at the Slaveykov House Museum in his hometown of Tryavna. The December issue of LIK magazine will document the discussions and feature a special section comprising 160 individual contributions.
BTA Director General Kiril Valchev stated that Pencho Slaveykov exemplifies the modern individual: one who embraces new ideas while maintaining spiritual growth and universal values without abandoning national tradition. Valchev noted that Slaveykov’s work was shaped by his father and Bulgaria’s liberation struggles, recalling that he was nominated for a Nobel Prize in 1912. Literary scholar Yordan Eftimov framed the initiative as an effort to create a self-portrait of the nation through re-examining familiar works.
He highlighted BTA’s role in disseminating expert views amidst misinformation, noting that the agency’s reach will illustrate how Slaveykov is remembered across Bulgaria. Tryavna Mayor Dencho Minev praised Slaveykov as a profound observer of the Bulgarian character. Vijay Joshi, CEO of India’s PTI, observed that the BTA’s partnership with local communities serves as a model for cultural preservation.
