Launches National Series on Pencho Slaveykov and Bulgarian Modernism

The Bulgarian Tourism Agency (BTA) initiated a nationwide series of discussions across its national press clubs marking the 160th birth anniversary of poet Pencho Slaveykov and the broader movement of Bulgarian modernism. The inaugural event, titled “Pencho Slaveykov Today,” was held at the Slaveykov House Museum in his hometown of Tryavna. To commemorate the occasion, the December issue of LIK magazine will feature reports from the discussions, alongside a special section comprising 160 individual contributions.

BTA Director General Kiril Valchev stated that Pencho Slaveykov exemplifies the modern individual: one who embraces new ideas while pursuing spiritual development and universal values without abandoning national identity. Valchev noted that Slaveykov’s work was shaped by his father and Bulgaria’s liberation struggles, adding that the poet was previously nominated for the Nobel Prize in 1912. Literary scholar Yordan Eftimov stated that a key objective of the initiative is to create a national self-portrait through new interpretations of familiar works, thereby aiding the understanding of Bulgarian identity amidst misinformation.
