Greek authorities have successfully brought a forest fire under control on Mount Parnitha, which is situated north of Athens. According to Kathimerini, the effort to extinguish the flames involved approximately 100 personnel, comprising firefighters and volunteers, supported by 22 fire engines and firefighting aircraft. The fire originated on the southern slope of the mountain on Thursday but has since been contained.
Authorities have reported no injuries or threats to nearby residential areas, and the cause of the incident remains under investigation. Kathimerini also noted that Mount Parnitha has sustained significant damage from successive summer wildfires, which have depleted large sections of the woodland and vegetation in the area. In response to the recurring threat of fire, Greece has implemented mandatory nationwide measures requiring property owners to clear dry vegetation as a preventative measure, with penalties for non-adherence.
Locally, Athens Mayor Haris Doukas has advised residents to maintain and clear their properties throughout the fire-risk season to mitigate the potential for fires to start or spread. Looking ahead, the Greek newspaper Proto Thema reported that by 2026, the country plans to deploy 164 new fire engines, valued at EUR 15.5 million. This equipment will include specialized tanker trucks with capacities up to 12,000 liters, alongside high-mobility vehicles intended for difficult terrains.
