The RitmiKKa folk dance troupe from Hamburg, Germany, is scheduled to participate in the 11th Expats Join Hands in Worldwide Dance travelling festival, taking place in Munich from May 15 to 17. Kamen Kunev, the long-time dancer, headmaster, and choreographer of the troupe, stated that the performance will feature a dance created approximately 60 years ago by choreographer Zahari Andreev, a graduate of his. Kunev emphasized that selecting this specific dance reflects a commitment to preserving the work of past performing arts legends.
He noted that such traditions remain vibrant and require continued support. According to Kunev, the dance evokes the communal spirit of a village square. He described how, in earlier times, people would gather by a village fire in the evenings with music, songs, and dance after working in the fields.
Kunev stated that participating in the festival with this choreography aims to demonstrate that unity in dance persists, even when members are abroad. He added that the spirit of Bulgaria travels wherever Bulgarians gather. The troupe will perform in new costumes specially designed by fashion designer Nikolay Kolev.
Preparations for the dance required an entire season of intensive rehearsals, with every detail practiced repeatedly. The Expats Join Hands in Worldwide Dance travelling festival is organized for amateur folk ensembles performing outside of Bulgaria. The initiative was launched by the Ot Izvora group in Lyon, France, which hosted the first edition in 2015 and the tenth in 2025.
The 11th edition in Munich is anticipated to host over 100 dance ensembles and more than 4,000 attendees. The Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) serves as the official media partner for the event.
