The Plovdiv Municipal Council recently voted to formally request the transfer of management authority for the Episcopal Basilica of Philippopolis from the Culture Ministry. Currently, the management of the historic site operates under a co-ownership arrangement, wherein the Plovdiv Municipality holds a 55.8% stake, and the State owns the remaining 44.2%. The Municipal Council stated that assuming direct management control is necessary to ensure the continuous protection, maintenance, and execution of activities related to the preservation of this significant immovable cultural asset.
Furthermore, the council emphasized that this transfer would allow for enhanced implementation of scientific research, cultural programming, educational initiatives, and tourism development surrounding the site. According to the council’s declaration, the local municipality possesses a comprehensive vision for the proper exhibition, preservation, and promotion of the area’s rich cultural and historical heritage. The Bishop’s Basilica of Philippopolis is recognized for its considerable historical, artistic, and scientific value.
Its importance is underscored by its inclusion on the UNESCO Tentative List for Cultural and Natural Heritage. Specifically, the basilica forms part of the serial property designated as “Bishop’s Basilica and Late-Antique Mosaics of Philippopolis, Roman Province of Thrace.”
The decision by the municipal council reflects a commitment to local stewardship over this major cultural landmark. By taking over management, the local authority aims to streamline conservation efforts and integrate the site more fully into regional cultural and academic life, ensuring its continued preservation for future generations.
