The Plovdiv Municipal Council convened on Thursday and voted to formally request assuming the management of the Episcopal Basilica of Philippopolis from the Culture Ministry. Currently, the basilica operates under a co-ownership regime, with the Plovdiv Municipality holding a 55.8% stake and the State owning the remaining 44.2%. The Municipal Council stated that this transfer of management is necessary to enhance the protection, maintenance, and ongoing activities related to preserving the site’s significant immovable cultural value.
According to the council’s decision, gaining direct control will allow the municipality to more effectively implement scientific, cultural, educational, and tourist initiatives. The council emphasized that the local government has a comprehensive vision for the exhibition, promotion, and preservation of the area’s rich historical and cultural heritage. The Bishop’s Basilica of Philippopolis is recognized as a monument possessing high historical, artistic, and scientific merit.
Its importance is underscored by its inclusion in the UNESCO Tentative List for Cultural and Natural Heritage, specifically as part of the serial property titled “Bishop’s Basilica and Late-Antique Mosaics of Philippopolis, Roman Province of Thrace.”
The municipal request signals a concerted effort by local authorities to streamline oversight and ensure consistent stewardship of this major cultural asset. By taking over management, the local council aims to better harmonize preservation efforts with community development goals, thereby safeguarding the basilica for future generations while maximizing its potential for cultural engagement.
