Launches National Series on Pencho Slaveykov and Bulgarian Modernism

The Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) initiated a nationwide series of discussions across its national press clubs to commemorate the 160th birth anniversary of poet Pencho Slaveykov and to explore the themes of Bulgarian modernism. The inaugural event, titled “Pencho Slaveykov Today,” was held in his hometown of Tryavna at the Slaveykov House Museum. The December issue of LIK magazine will feature coverage of the discussions, alongside a special section comprising 160 contributions of 160 words each, mirroring a previous commemorative effort for Aleko Konstantinov.

BTA Director General Kiril Valchev stated that Pencho Slaveykov exemplifies the modern individual: one who remains open to new ideas. Valchev emphasized that modernism, according to Slaveykov, involves embracing new concepts while pursuing spiritual growth and universal values, without abandoning national identity or tradition. He noted that Slaveykov’s work was shaped by his father, Petko Slaveykov, and Bulgaria’s liberation struggles, recalling that the poet was nominated for a Nobel Prize in 1912.

Literary scholar Yordan Eftimov highlighted the goal of creating a national self-portrait through new interpretations of familiar works, assisting Bulgarians in self-understanding. He underscored BTA’s role in providing accurate information amid misinformation. Tryavna Mayor Dencho Minev described Slaveykov as a profound observer of national character and a forceful critic advocating for higher artistic standards.

Vijay Joshi, CEO of India’s Press Trust of India (PTI), who attended the launch, suggested that India could draw inspiration from how BTA partners with local communities to preserve and promote Bulgarian culture. Pencho Slaveykov (1866–1912) endured physical impairments early in life, which influenced his creative perspective. His literary output spanned intimate lyric poetry and socio-critical works, solidifying his democratic ideals.

His life and enduring legacy continue to enrich Bulgarian cultural memory.
