The “For the Freedom of a Nation” exhibition, organized by the St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library and the State Archives Agency, is set to open at the Bulgarian Cultural and Information Centre in Skopje on Tuesday.
The display commemorates the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The exhibition features an extensive collection of over 130 historical documents. These materials—including protocols, letters, telegrams, and appeals—detail the preparation, course, suppression, and aftermath of the pivotal uprising.
Furthermore, the collection provides insight into the international reaction to the events, while included Ottoman documents offer the perspectives of both local and central Ottoman authorities of the time. Among the document authors are prominent historical figures such as Hristo Botev, Vasil Levski, Lyuben Karavelov, and Stefan Stambolov. The display presents a mix of well-known and lesser-documented materials, tracing the revolutionary activities across various districts and highlighting the role of the Bulgarian emigre community alongside the international response.
The cultural significance of the exhibit was underscored by its official opening in Sofia on April 20. The event took place under the patronage of President Iliana Iotova and was supported financially by the Ministry of Culture. This comprehensive cultural undertaking aims to provide a detailed historical record of the period, ensuring that the memory of the uprising remains central to national historical understanding.
