The “For the Freedom of a Nation” exhibition, organized by the St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library and the State Archives Agency, commemorates the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising.
The display is scheduled to open at the Bulgarian Cultural and Information Centre in Skopje on Tuesday. The collection features more than 130 primary source documents, including protocols, letters, telegrams, and appeals. These materials provide comprehensive insight into the preparation, progression, suppression, and lasting consequences of the uprising.
Furthermore, the documents illuminate the international response to the events, while included Ottoman records offer a perspective from both local and central Ottoman authorities regarding the period. The authorship of the displayed materials includes prominent figures of the era, such as Hristo Botev, Vasil Levski, Lyuben Karavelov, and Stefan Stambolov. The exhibition showcases a mix of well-known and newly presented documents, tracing the scope of the revolutionary efforts across various districts and detailing the significant role played by the Bulgarian emigre community and international observers.
The exhibition previously opened in Sofia on April 20, an event held under the patronage of President Iliana Iotova and supported financially by the Ministry of Culture. The display serves as a major historical resource, preserving and presenting documentation related to this pivotal moment in Bulgarian history.
