Mayor: Terminal 3 of Sofia Airport Could Become Symbol of Returning to Bulgaria

The development of a new Terminal 3 at Vasil Levski Sofia Airport represents one of Bulgaria’s major planned infrastructure investments for the coming years. According to statements from Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev, the new facility is anticipated to serve as a key indicator of economic revitalization and development opportunities within the capital city. The proposed Terminal 3 is projected to cover an area of approximately 65,000 square meters.

It is designed to connect with the existing Terminal 2 and possess the capacity to handle up to 20 million passengers annually. The overall plan also encompasses the creation of a new transport hub and enhancements to connectivity links between the airport and the city of Sofia. Construction is scheduled to commence in the coming years, with an anticipated completion date between 2030 and 2031.

Beyond its physical scale, officials have emphasized the strategic importance of the project for Bulgaria. The focus, it is argued, extends beyond passenger throughput to attracting residents who choose to establish their future lives within the country. In procedural steps toward realizing this vision, SOF Connect announced in November 2025 the initiation of the pre-qualification stage for the tender process.

This tender covers the design and construction of the new Terminal 3, the associated forecourt area, a comprehensive transport center, and the modernization of the current Terminal 2 facilities at the Sofia airport.
