Mayor: Terminal 3 of Sofia Airport Could Become Symbol of Returning to Bulgaria

The planned construction of a new Terminal 3 at Vasil Levski Sofia Airport represents one of Bulgaria’s most significant upcoming infrastructure investments. According to statements made regarding the project, the new facility is envisioned not only as an expansion of transport capacity but also as a symbol of economic revival and development within the capital, Sofia. The proposed Terminal 3 is slated to cover approximately 65,000 square meters.

It will connect directly with the existing Terminal 2 and possess the capacity to handle up to 20 million passengers annually. Beyond the new terminal structure, the development plans incorporate the creation of a modern transport hub and enhanced connectivity links with the wider city of Sofia. Construction is anticipated to commence in the coming years, with an estimated completion timeframe set for 2030–2031.

The importance of this development extends beyond sheer passenger numbers. Officials suggest the project aims to signal a sustained commitment to creating opportunities, encouraging residents and businesses to build their future within Bulgaria. In a procedural update, SOF Connect announced in November 2025 the commencement of the pre-qualification stage for the tender process.

This tender covers the design and construction of the new Terminal 3, the associated forecourt area, a dedicated transport center, and the modernization of the current Terminal 2 facilities. This major infrastructure upgrade is positioned to significantly bolster Sofia’s role as a regional gateway.
