Mayor: Terminal 3 of Sofia Airport Could Become Symbol of Returning to Bulgaria

The development of a new Terminal 3 at Vasil Levski Sofia Airport represents one of the most significant infrastructure investments planned for Bulgaria in the coming years. The proposed facility is designed to enhance the connectivity and capacity of the capital, Sofia. According to project details, the new terminal is slated to cover approximately 65,000 square meters.

It will integrate with the existing Terminal 2 and is projected to handle up to 20 million passengers annually. Beyond the terminal structure, the plans encompass the development of a comprehensive transport hub and the improvement of overall links between the airport and the city. Construction is anticipated to commence within the coming years, with an estimated completion timeframe set for 2030–2031.

The scale of the project is viewed by authorities as having a broader economic impact, intended to bolster Sofia’s role as a gateway for international arrivals and support future development within Bulgaria. In procedural updates, SOF Connect announced the commencement of the pre-qualification stage for the tender process in November 2025. This tender covers the design and construction of the new Terminal 3, the associated forecourt area, a dedicated transport center, and the modernization of the existing Terminal 2 facilities.

This multi-faceted investment aims to modernize the entire airport complex, establishing a state-of-the-art travel gateway for the nation.
