Mayor: Terminal 3 of Sofia Airport Could Become Symbol of Returning to Bulgaria

The planned construction of a new Terminal 3 at Vasil Levski Sofia Airport represents one of Bulgaria’s major upcoming infrastructure investments. According to Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev, the new facility is intended to symbolize both the return of people to Bulgaria and the growth opportunities available within the capital city. The project specifications indicate that the new terminal will span approximately 65,000 square meters.

It is designed to connect with the existing Terminal 2 and possess the capacity to handle up to 20 million passengers annually. Furthermore, the plans incorporate the development of a new transport hub and enhanced linkages with the broader city infrastructure. Construction is anticipated to commence in the coming years, with an estimated completion date between 2030 and 2031.

Beyond its physical scale, Terziev emphasized that the project’s greater importance lies in its ability to attract residents. He stated that the measure of success should be measured not merely by passenger throughput, but by the number of individuals choosing to establish and build their future within the country. In this context, the new terminal could serve as a symbol of a nation people are eager to return to, and a city that offers tangible opportunities for future development in Sofia.

The formal process for the development was advanced in November 2025, when SOF Connect announced the start of the pre-qualification stage for the tender. This tender covers the design and construction of the new Terminal 3, the forecourt area, a transport center, and the necessary modernization of the existing Terminal 2 at the Sofia airport.
