The “For the Freedom of a Nation” exhibition, organized by the St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library and the State Archives Agency, is set to open at the Bulgarian Cultural and Information Centre in Skopje.
This display commemorates the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The exhibition features an extensive collection of over 130 primary documents. These materials—which include protocols, letters, telegrams, appeals, and certificates—provide comprehensive documentation detailing the preparation, progression, suppression, and subsequent consequences of the April Uprising.
Furthermore, the documents shed light on the international reaction to the revolt. The inclusion of Ottoman records offers insight into the viewpoints held by both local and central Ottoman authorities during the period. Prominent figures of the era, such as Hristo Botev, Vasil Levski, Lyuben Karavelov, and Stefan Stambolov, are among the authors represented in the collection.
The display presents both widely recognized and lesser-known historical records. These documents trace the events across various revolutionary districts, detail the role of the Bulgarian emigre community, and document the international response to the national struggle. The exhibition officially commenced in Sofia on April 20, under the patronage of President Iliana Iotova and with financial support from the Ministry of Culture.
The display serves as a significant cultural resource, ensuring that the multifaceted history of the uprising remains accessible to the public.
