Saxophonist Patrick Bartley and His Quartet Perform in Sofia on International Jazz Day

American saxophonist and composer Patrick Bartley is scheduled to perform in Sofia with his quartet to commemorate International Jazz Day. According to organizers, the performance will take place at Hall 3 of the National Palace of Culture (NDK) on Thursday, April 30, as part of the Salon des Arts at NDK. The event will feature original music by Bartley from his unrecorded project, New Visions.

Co-organizers of the event include the Festivals in Bulgaria Association, NDK, Jazz FM Radio, and Sofia’s National Academy of Music. Furthermore, the American quartet will conduct a workshop with local Bulgarian jazz musicians. Born in 1993, Patrick Bartley initially studied clarinet before switching to the saxophone in high school, making his first professional recording at age 17.

His career has included collaborations with prominent artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Herbie Hancock, and Jon Batiste. Bartley has performed at major venues including Madison Square Garden and Jazz at Lincoln Center, and has appeared on television programs like “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on CBS. His recognition includes being twice invited to the Grammy Recording Academy’s High School Ensemble and reaching the final nomination stage in the “Best Improvised Jazz Solo” category in 2014.

Bartley also performed at the 52nd Grammy Awards ceremony with the Dave Matthews Band. Additionally, at Wynton Marsalis’s invitation, he composed music for a concert series at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Critics note that Bartley’s music successfully integrates the jazz tradition with contemporary influences from funk, soul, and Japanese pop culture, resulting in a dynamic experience appealing to both established jazz audiences and new listeners.
