52nd National Assembly Opens

Bulgaria’s 52nd National Assembly convened for its inaugural session on Thursday morning. The opening proceedings were led by Rumen Milanov, a 78-year-old Member of Parliament representing Progressive Bulgaria, who addressed the newly assembled legislature. During his address, Milanov outlined two primary mandates for the body: reinforcing the rule of law and safeguarding domestic peace.

He urged collaboration among all political factions, stating, “Regardless of our partisan differences, we must work together for our children’s future, respecting the work of our constituents and in the name of the Bulgarian people.” He emphasized that the collective national spirit must supersede minor disagreements, noting that citizens had entrusted the elected representatives with their confidence and expectations. Following the address, Milanov administered the official oath to the 240 lawmakers. The oath requires members to swear, “I do swear in the name of the Republic of Bulgaria that I will observe the Constitution and the laws of the land and will be guided in all my actions by the interests of the people.

I have sworn to it.”

The proceedings included the playing of the Bulgarian national anthem and the anthem of Europe within the debating chamber. Following the ceremony, members of the Assembly were required to sign the official oath documentation. The opening marked the beginning of a new legislative cycle, underscoring the responsibility of the representatives to act in the best interest of the nation and uphold the foundational principles of the state.
