-UDF to Back Progressive Bulgaria Candidate for Parliament Chair

During the inaugural sitting of the 52nd National Assembly, the GERB-UDF parliamentary group issued a declaration supporting a representative from Progressive Bulgaria to serve as the Chair. MP Toma Bikov stated that this support reflects the recent electoral victory of Progressive Bulgaria and their rightful position within the legislature. Bikov clarified that the gesture was intended not as a negotiation tactic, but as an effort to revitalize established parliamentary traditions and elevate the political standard of the body.

According to the group, maintaining a higher political standard does not negate the necessity of political disagreement; rather, it mandates that the opposition must effectively represent citizens with differing views, ensuring their right to express these opinions openly. The GERB-UDF also criticized the political climate in Bulgaria, noting that the country has been governed by coalition governments over the past twelve years. They highlighted that the last five years have been marked by chronic political instability and an inability among parliamentary forces to establish a stable administration.

Bikov pointed out that this instability occurred despite the need for decisive actions in a volatile geopolitical environment and the necessity for systemic reforms across public sectors. Furthermore, the group expressed concern over fiscal policy, stating that budget deficits have been treated as routine occurrences. The declaration concluded by reiterating the need to raise the level of political discourse, warning that personal attacks and scandals undermine public trust in the entire political system and its institutions within Bulgaria.
