-UDF to Back Progressive Bulgaria Candidate for Parliament Chair

During the inaugural session of the 52nd National Assembly, the GERB-UDF parliamentary group announced its support for a representative from Progressive Bulgaria to assume the role of Chair. According to MP Toma Bikov, speaking on behalf of the group, this support was based on Progressive Bulgaria’s success in the recent elections. Bikov clarified that this action was intended not as a negotiation tactic, but as an effort to restore established parliamentary traditions and elevate the political standard within the assembly.

Bikov emphasized that a higher political standard does not negate political disagreement. Instead, it mandates that the opposition must effectively represent citizens holding views different from the parliamentary majority, thereby ensuring their right to open expression. He stated that this representation would be the primary focus of the opposition in the current parliament.

The GERB-UDF group also addressed the broader political landscape of Bulgaria, criticizing the governance structure over the past decade. Bikov noted that Bulgaria has been characterized by coalition governments for the last twelve years, with the last five years marked by persistent political instability and an inability among parliamentary forces to establish a stable government. He argued that this instability persisted despite the necessity for reforms across public systems and in an unstable geopolitical environment.

The group warned that personal attacks and scandals erode confidence in the entire political system. In summary, while supporting the leadership of the newly elected Progressive Bulgarian contingent, the UDF group framed its actions as a commitment to improving the institutional integrity and political debate within the nation.
