Gabriela Naplatanova, Chair of the Council for Electronic Media (CEM), stated that only strong and independent journalism can hold those in power accountable for their decisions. Addressing the opening meeting of the regulator during her second term, Naplatanova urged journalists to uphold high professional ethical standards and safeguard the dignity of their profession. She emphasized that while the CEM is committed to supporting the media environment, the primary responsibility for its health rests with journalists and creative professionals.
Naplatanova noted that merely issuing statements is insufficient to guarantee freedom of speech or journalistic autonomy. She further asserted that robust, independent media is crucial for enabling society to develop critical thinking skills and make informed decisions regarding its future direction. Looking ahead, Naplatanova announced the CEM’s intent to remain open to society, academic institutions, and the media industry, promoting initiatives designed to improve content quality.
She acknowledged the valuable contributions of the regulator’s members. Naplatanova, who was elected Chair on April 23rd, confirmed her term runs until April 27, 2027. Although the role of the regulator’s members is temporary, she stressed that efforts to protect the media landscape must be continuous.
She concluded by reinforcing that the commitment to strong, independent journalism remains vital for democratic accountability.
